High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects almost one third of the adult American population, yet a third of the people afflicted don’t even know they have it. It’s been dubbed “the silent killer” for this very reason: many times,there are no outward symptoms to warn its victims that there’s a problem.

There are two types of high blood pressure: essential and secondary. Essential hypertension refers to high blood pressure that has no specific cause, and represents the vast majority of hypertension diagnoses. High blood pressure that is caused by some other condition, such as chronic renal failure or other forms of kidney disease is known as secondary hypertension, and makes up about 10% of all cases.

The fact that high blood pressure is so often linked to unknown causes often makes it difficult to treat effectively, but research has shown that there are several factors that may contribute to it, or worsen its effects. These include obesity, high sodium intake,alcohol consumption and stress factors like job pressures, noisy or crowded living environments. Family genetics also seem to play a roles, as people with a family history of hypertension are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure themselves.
