Over the past 20 years, the incidence of ectopic pregnancy (mainly tubal pregnancy)  increased two or three times in women around the world. In the past that the main reason for ectopic pregnancy and pelvic inflammatory disease is due to sexually transmitted diseases, but why ectopic pregnancy still keep increasing in the region where  pelvic inflammatory disease keep reducing ? Experts have been looking for new pregnancy risk factors, one of which is cigarette smoke.

The experts found that, regardless how sexual history, pelvic infections history, birth control and reproductive history changes ,the incidence of ectopic pregnancy have something to do with the smoke that pregnant women inhale .

Pregnant women are divided into tow groups, one are smokers and one are non-smokers.And the result show that the incidence of ectopic pregnancy is 40.1% in smokers and only 29.7% in non-smokers.there are obvious differences between the two groups.A reseach group in University of Washington have compare the disease situation with 274 patients with ectopic pregnancy and  727 pregnant women in the some period and found out that the occurance of ectopic pregnancy will be higer 40% than in the non-smokers.

The reason why ectopic pregnancy occur in the women who smoke is that smoke can stimulate the small vessel wall to be thicken and the blood circulation in pelvic thus can lead to a series of changed in the variation of fertilized egg  implantation. Therefore , some people believe that nicotine can damage the micro-made filament structure in tubal thus impede the normal fertilized egg to be transmitted to the uterus.

Therefore, the United States have put forward to slogan”If you pregnant, quit immediately”.Moreover, pregnant women should not smoke ,nor go to the place which is full of smoke.

  1. Another serious risk factor during pregnancy is a mouth infection. According to research by Dr. Stephen Offenbacher and his research team, pregnant women who have a serious gum infection (periodontitis) are nearly eight times more likely to have a premature/low birth weight baby. Pregnancy gingivitis – swollen, bleeding gums – is common during pregnancy due to bacteria in the mouth aggrevated by the excessive hormones produced in preparation for childbirth. A simple toothpaste made with baking soda, salt, and hydrogen peroxide (mixed 50/50 with water)is very helpful to reduce the bacteria in the mouth. Be sure to brush gums as well as teeth to be effective.
