<description>Another serious risk factor during pregnancy is a mouth infection. According to research by Dr. Stephen Offenbacher and his research team, pregnant women who have a serious gum infection (periodontitis) are nearly eight times more likely to have a premature/low birth weight baby. Pregnancy gingivitis - swollen, bleeding gums - is common during pregnancy due to bacteria in the mouth aggrevated by the excessive hormones produced in preparation for childbirth. A simple toothpaste made with baking soda, salt, and hydrogen peroxide (mixed 50/50 with water)is very helpful to reduce the bacteria in the mouth. Be sure to brush gums as well as teeth to be effective.
