Name: Rhizoma Cyperi
Resource: The rhizome of Cyperus rotundus L.,family Cyperaceae.
Characteristic:
Rhizome oblong or cambiform,some slightly curved,2.0-3.5 cm long,0.5-1.0 cm in diameter.Surface brown,with longitudinal wrindles,cortex showing several nodes attached with many fibers,root scars and bud scars;smooth and nodes becoming indistinct when the cortex is peeled off.Fracture surface brown,with longitudinal wrinkles,cortex showing several nodes attached with many fibers,root scars and bud scars;smooth and nodes becoming indistinct when the cortex is peeled off.Fracture surface brown after steamed or cooked,or white when dried;endodermis rings visible,vascular bundles scattered.Aromatic in odour.Acrid,slightly bitter and sweet in taste,mild in nature,and attributive to liver and stomach channels.
Pharmacodynamics:
Disperse the stagnated liver energy,activate vital energy circulation and alleviate pain,regulate menstruation and prevent miscarriage:For stagnation of liver energy with distensioon and pain of the hypochondria and breast,dysmenorrhea and irregular menstruation,usually used together with Rhizoma Atractylodis,Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong,Fructus Gardeniae and Massa Medicata Fermentata(Yueju Pill);for headache due to stagnation of liver energy;for those comlicated by stomach-cold with epigastric pain,vomiting and acid regurgitation,usually used together with Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum(Pill of Alpiniae Officinarum and Cyperi);for stagnation of liver energy and stomach energy with morning sickness and threatened abortion,used together with Caulis Perillae.
Pharmacological:
1.Its 5% extract inhibits the uterine contraction in guinea-pigs,rabbits,cats and dogs in vitro.
2.Analgesic.
3.Promoting the secretion of saliva and gastric juice and expelling flatus.
4.Antipyretic.Its alcoholic extract lowers experimental fever in rats.
5.Slowing heart rate and lowering blood pressure.Decoction:3-9g.
