Washing one’s face may appear to be the simplest and least talked about topic on earth, but if not done properly, it can damage your skin and eyes. A face speaks volumes about one’s personality, and a well looked after face not only attracts attention and adulation, but fosters confidence in a person. Therefore the face must be cleansed properly and in the right way. It’s pretty simple.

First off, the most important thing in your face washing regimen is to choose the proper face wash. Always make sure the face wash is non comedogenic so it does not clog your pores and lead to acne. Choose a fragrance free wash that will not irritate your skin. If you are washing your face specifically to prevent acne look for a face wash that contains salicylic acid. The proper face wash should make your skin feel fresh and soft, stay away from a face wash that makes your face feel oily.

Second for Some: A Separate Toner

If you feel you need a toner, think about finding a better-for-you cleanser instead.
A toner’s role is to remove oily residue and provide a fresh feeling; it does nothing to firm the skin long-term. With today’s rinse-off cleansers, you’ll rarely need a toner — you might want one, though, if your face has become oily over the course of the day.

Last but Not Least: Should You Use a Moisturizer? Maybe.

For dry-skin sufferers, a moisturizer can soothe and protect — the test is whether your skin feels too tight. There are many effective moisturizers — try one (sample size available?), then listen to your skin. These brands come recommended: by day, Oil of Olay; while you sleep, Estee Lauder.

When washing your face do not use washes that contain beads in it. Other things to look out for are loofahs and other harsh scrubbers. The process should be gentle and leave your face feeling refreshed. It is important that you do not over wash. Your skin produces natural oils and if you wash too often it will lead to over production of these oils and can lead to acne. Washing your face two to three times a day is the appropriate amount. After a matter of a few weeks you should begin to notice increased softness in your skin.
